When Donald Trump isn’t threatening to pull the United States out of NATO, he is firing off a barrage of tweets at CNN and other news outlets, most of which have been labeled a “hate group” by the White House.
And he has threatened to shut down the news outlet’s operations.
CNN has been a favorite target of Trump, and the administration is not afraid to target the network.
The administration is especially annoyed with CNN’s reporting on the Russia probe.
In his first week in office, Trump threatened to label the network a “total hoax.”
“I am calling CNN Fake News,” Trump tweeted in December.
“Fake news CNN!
Trump has since tweeted at the network, accusing it of spreading “fake news” and of having “no integrity” when it comes to its coverage of the Russia investigation.
But when CNN reports that Trump is planning to cut off its access to the White Helmets rescue workers who were rescuing people from the World Trade Center, the White Reporters Association, a trade group for news media, sent out a tweet condemning Trump for threatening to cut its funding.
“We will not stand idly by and allow a President who has no credibility to dictate the direction of our media, especially when the facts are not in his favor,” the group tweeted.
CNN’s decision to publish the video of Trump saying the White Helmet rescuers are fake was seen as an attempt to expose his lies, and as such it is the kind of news outlet that Trump will use to further his political agenda.
“The President’s latest attacks on CNN are yet another example of how his administration is trying to intimidate, bully and silence all opposition,” CNN spokesperson Lauren Prudente said in a statement.
“He should be ashamed of himself.
This is how a president bullies.
This was a blatant attempt to intimidate and silence any and all news organizations that report on him.”
CNN has received more than $1 billion in federal funding in the last three years, according to data from the government watchdog group Reporters Without Borders.
CNN is among several media outlets that Trump has attacked for its coverage during the Russia scandal.
In February, he tweeted at NBC News and accused the network of being “dishonest” and “fake.”
In July, Trump tweeted at CNN, accusing the network and others of being biased against him.
Trump also repeatedly tweeted that CNN is biased against Democrats.
In December, he said he would “cut off CNN from funding if they lie to the American people.”
CNN, along with many other news organizations, has been under intense pressure in recent weeks from Trump and his supporters to pull back on their coverage of Russian President Vladimir Putin and his government.
In a report published this week by the Committee to Protect Journalists, the government’s watchdog group, the Department of Justice filed a lawsuit accusing CNN of violating federal wiretapping laws.
The lawsuit said CNN is “actively conspiring with other foreign government and intelligence agencies” to spy on Trump.
“CNN is an integral part of the Trump-Russia disinformation operation, and its efforts to disseminate disinformation are being used to advance Trump’s agenda,” the DOJ said in the complaint.
“As a result of the DOJ’s ongoing investigation, CNN has begun to take steps to limit its cooperation with foreign intelligence agencies and to protect the integrity of its journalism.”
CNN’s White Helmet rescue operation was the subject of a 2015 report from the U.S. House Committee on Foreign Affairs that said the organization has been working to save civilians from the rubble of the World Tower of the Americas.
The White Helmeting team was also accused of helping the Russian government hack into the computers of the House Committee for International Relations, a bipartisan committee that holds hearings on the Russian military and intelligence services.
Trump tweeted that he “will do anything in my power to stop the killing” of the White Knights.
The President’s tweet sparked a backlash on social media, with many calling the tweet “sickening” and a “dangerous threat.”
CNN defended the organization’s reporting, and said that its reporters were still reporting on Russia.
“It is a longstanding tradition for us to cover these events on our networks,” CNN spokeswoman Lauren Pruddente said.
“If the President wants to attack the media, we are happy to help him do that.”
CNN said it was not planning to back down.
“This is not a threat to CNN,” Pruddenny said.
CNN said its reporters are still covering the White Russia scandal, and that they are still working to get to the bottom of the accusations that Russia interfered in the 2016 election and sought to influence the outcome.
The network also defended its decision to run the video showing Trump saying that the White Haulers were fake.
“Our reporters are not afraid of the truth, and this is what the White League Rescue Team is about,” Prudenny said in an email.
“There is a lot of truth in the video that we are still pursuing.”
